Upgrading EV Charging Software with OCPI Integration and Real-Time Communication
01.
Summary of this project
Our client, a provider in EV charging infrastructure, looked to modernize their network and improve interoperability across charging systems.
With over 120,000 charging stations connected to their central software hub, the client’s network links service providers and EV users. Their mission is to drive the transition to a sustainable energy future by making EV charging accessible.
To help our client achieve their goals of increased interoperability and secure communication. We upgraded their system by integrating the Open Charge Point Interface (OCPI) and making sure it worked alongside Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP). This project included a real-time translation service to manage external requests and execute commands accurately, making the system more reliable and adaptable to evolving industry needs.

70% of EV users say better access to connected networks improves their experience
With the rapid growth of the EV market, a more connected charging experience is essential. Greater interoperability ensures users can find, pay for, and use charging stations easily, regardless of the provider.
As demand grows, stronger encryption and authentication are needed to prevent unauthorized access and data breaches, keeping transactions secure. Additionally, features like smart charging, remote diagnostics, and over-the-air updates require charging stations to support more complex functions.

OCPI integration to improve network access and security in EV charging
To build a reliable EV charging solution, our team needed to consider several key challenges. The new platform had to support communication between charging networks and be both secure and scalable.
By integrating OCPI, updating protocols, and implementing real-time data handling, the project was designed to support our client’s EV charging solution.
Some key challenges were:
- Enhanced security: stronger encryption and authentication were needed to prevent unauthorized access and protect data.
- Updated features: the system required support for smart charging, remote diagnostics, and remote software updates.
- Seamless interoperability: communication between different networks, chargers and the grid was essential for compatibility and ease of use.
- Real-time data exchange: the system needed to share live data on station status, availability, and transactions accurately across networks.

Our role in enhancing EV charging interoperability and security
We worked with our client to upgrade their EV charging platform. We updated the OCPI technology, and created a dedicated translation service to support advanced features and reliable data exchange with OCPP 2.0.
To ensure efficient communication and system security, the platform enables real-time data handling, and compatibility with various EV networks.
Key Features of the solution:
- Enhanced security: OCPP 2.0 provided stronger encryption and authentication to prevent unauthorized access and protect data.
- Advanced features: OCPP 2.0 supported smart charging, remote diagnostics, and over-the-air software updates, enabling more flexible options for our client.
- Seamless interoperability: OCPI integration enabled effective communication between different networks, allowing the system to expand by easily integrating new partners and services.
- Real-time data exchange: OCPI allowed the system to share live data on station status, availability, and transactions accurately across networks, ensuring reliable and up-to-date information.
- External request handling: a translation service manages requests from external services via OCPI, accurately converting them into core commands with OCPP to ensure communication with physical devices.

The result
Our team upgraded the client’s EV charging platform, now supporting over 500,000 charge points. The integration of OCPI improved security, interoperability, and real-time data management across networks.
The system enables efficient communication between EV chargers & the grid and includes a translation service to manage external requests. These updates ensure reliable operation and scalability, delivering for over 1,000 B2B customers and meeting the demands of a growing EV market.
