Expanding Access to EV Charging with a Custom Mobile Platform

A sleek electric car is parked on a charming residential street, connected to a charging station. Autumn leaves cover the car and pavement, creating a picturesque neighborhood setting.

Project summary

The shift toward sustainable mobility is growing, by 2035 there could be around 110 million electric cars on EU roads.  However, EV cars face one major hurdle, widespread access to green charging remains a barrier.

A leading public EV charging provider aimed to create an affordable and flexible charging network that gives users the ability to power their vehicles with clean electricity, wherever they park. Users need the freedom to choose their electricity provider or even use self-generated power from home or work installations.

To achieve this, we helped our client develop a mobile solution. One that integrates charge point accessibility, billing, and renewable energy selection into a single, user-friendly platform.

The need for smarter charging networks

EV adoption is growing rapidly, with nearly 3.2 million new electric cars registered in Europe in 2023 alone. However, traditional charging infrastructure depends on fixed locations, restricting EV owners. By integrating smart mobile metering directly into vehicles, users can use energy from home solar panels or other renewable sources.

Our client aimed to use IT, telecommunications, and network virtualization to build a scalable charging solution. By integrating charging cables and sockets for installation on walls and public lamp posts, they worked to expand access and support the transition to a sustainable energy network.

03.

Delivering a feature-rich mobile platform

We worked with our client to create a mobile platform that helps users find and manage charging stations more easily. It includes smart metering, secure billing, and real-time charge point mapping. This gives EV owners more control over how they charge their vehicles.

Key features of the mobile app include:

  • Smart cable integration: enables EV charging anywhere using a Smart Cable and mobile connectivity.

  • Real-Time charge point mapping: provides live updates on available charging locations.

  • Secure and transparent billing: real-time access to charging history and costs through a mobile app.

  • Advanced security measures: protects payment and location data using encryption.

  • Comprehensive energy management: allows users to track and optimize their energy consumption.

A mobile app UI for an EV charging platform is displayed on two smartphones. The interface features real-time charging status, pricing details, and energy usage in kilowatts. Users can access vehicle details, subscription plans, and currency settings, all within a sleek dark-themed design.

The other screen features a map with charging station locations, indicating availability with green and red icons. The dark-themed design enhances readability and usability.

Improving the user experience

The mobile app means users can access and manage charging points all from one application. To deliver on the key features, our team was tasked with meeting additional functionality to improve the end-user experience.

Key project tasks:

  • QR code scanner to make accessing charging points easier
  • Fleet user profiles to simplify the management of multiple vehicles.
  • In-app billing system with filtering for easy expense tracking
  • QR code fraud prevention measures to help keep transactions secure
  • Centralized charge point management for better control and oversight
  • Transparent charging data so electricity use is measured and reported accurately
  • Integration with national and private charging networks to give clients a larger network choice
  • Charge Data Records API to enhance tracking, reporting, and insights
Due to the complexity of the mobile app and the number of features, we needed to design a structured roadmap. We prioritized delivering the most essential features first, before expanding the app with additional functionalities over time.
